In January 2021, 23 Chinese athletes, including 2 athletes who went on to win Gold in Tokyo, tested positive to trimetazidine. According to Hajo Seppelt (same journalist who broke the IWF scandal), who has worked on this case for 2 years and is airing a documentary on this tonight - the athletes (swimmers), were investigated and it was found that the source of the positives was a contamination at the hotel where the athletes were staying.

The internal Chinese investigation, its acceptance by WADA and the lack of disclosure of the entire occurrence has put into the question the confidence that some have in WADA.

USADA's comments on the matter are about to be pursued by WADA

Criticisms of WADA/CHINADA are well deserved, but hypocritical coming from USADA.

WADA may have been limited in their investigative power given the laws around international travel during the pandemic. My guess is those swimmers almost certainly took trimetazidine, with low levels in urinalysis being the result of cycling off weeks before the competition.

Call me cynical, but I think this will amount to nothing for many reasons, including IOC/WADA/CAS politics.

42 month suspension for both implies cooperation to avoid getting two sanctions of four years, which would 100% eliminate Ukraine from Olympic eligibility. The removal of "some or all" qualification slots is now in the hands of the IWF, for both Ukraine and Turkey.
