Women's 59kg - finally a session I can watch live
(I am procrastinating urgently due work/life commitments with weightlifting and delicious spicy Thai food)

GOMEZ VALDIVIA Janeth MEX moves into OQR #6, taking the Mexican spot from her teammate with 98+125 (5/6) = 223. Equal PB snatch, 1kg PB clean and jerk, 3kg total PB.

WILKINS Taylor Nicole USA with 97+124 = 221, matching DIAZ Hidilyn PHI. Moves into OQR #8 and more importantly the USA slot. Her second attempt clean and jerk was a 2kg international PB, looked maximal but excellent execution. 4kg total intl PB.

MAGISTRIS Lucrezia ITA bombs for the third time in a row. She looked in better physical shape today than the last 3-4 competitions.
IMO she was probably capable of 101/117 today, if they had treated it like a normal competition with normal attempt selection.

The Italian team's insistence on starting at a third attempt weight is absurd, especially for someone who has had issues with hip bursitis (specific bursae not mentioned, but management for WL is largely the same) and seemingly confidence to go with it.

Instead, starting on 100 she barely made it (which was a great lift), then terribly missed 101 twice.
Clean and Jerk 117x three times - the third was technically the best attempt, but by then she was too tired to come through the jerk.
Can't do anything but feel bad for her, she looked distraught after those clean and jerks.

Elle wrote: Sun Jun 11, 2023 8:03 pm Imperio did a strange meet.

In my opinion the Italian coaches wanted her to compete in another weight class to push her, to unlock her snatch, mostly. This is way the second call in the snatch was 85kg, something she did only in 2021. The problem with the scoreboard may have affected her snatch competition? I don't know, but also the first attempt was a little bit "off".

That clean... well, I I've never seen her do a clean like that. The question is: she was already injured or she injured herself with that clean?
She weighed 51.75, so I think like Massidda, she just didn't cut weight like she normally would. I think she was probably already injured or training/competing through some kind of pain or other problem, just aggravated by that clean. 97kg is quite heavy, but not maximal if she's in shape and not cutting weight.

My guess is she had knee or back pain coming into the competition, or during the warmup in the clean and jerks (probably pre-comp judging by her 85).
She was heavily knee wrapped in the clean and jerks, and a crashy clean sent her to the shadow realm.

TBH my interest dropped to 5% after PRK went on their cosmic journey. Results so far are uninteresting.

I'm just not sure what was the point of this meet besides "Olympic qualifier." No big names, no big teams, unremarkable results.

W64A session scoreboard looks strange, didn't watch.
M81A was also a strange session. 3 pulled out prior to lifting, BEN HNIA Karem pulled out after snatches.
2 real competitors.

Rahmat Erwin ABDULLAH INA went 4/6, totalling 358 (156 + 202). Probably weighed around 78kg, will be interesting to see BW (edit: 77.60).
Very close misses on 161 snatch and 209 WR clean and jerk, trademark Erwin Abdullah side chest and double biceps poses after the 209 attempt.

M89
Again, totally unremarkable.
ASAYONAK Petr BLR AIN hit 368, 3/6. Takes him up to 9th place, replacing the yeeted from qualification anyway Rejepbay REJEPOV TKM.
DAMRON Nathan Charles USA hit 365, 2/6. Results gimped by terrible USA attempt selection, he looked capable of 372-375 today.

CUMMINGS JR Clarence at 89 with 143/148x/153x + 180/190x/190x.

Edit: He's had some injures and struggled with managing depression after Tokyo (common), probably contributing heavily to his weight gain and decline in performance. It's supposedly getting better, so hopefully that upward trajectory in his wellbeing improves regardless of any performance changes. If he wants to go to Paris, 73kg is his only realistic chance but cutting 16kg in a year is a big ask and probably not healthy for someone who's struggling with depression.

BRUCE Kyle John Ryan Christopher P (IWF character limit) AUS is now the only Paris eligible lifter in M89 from Oceania, but he bombed on 145.

W71
Men sexualising women they don't personally know, without their consent, are a plague on this earth. If the blood went from their dicks to their brains, they might actually understand weightlifting as a sport. God forbid women existing in this world.

USA continues with its questionable weight selection for ALWINE Meredith Leigh (bomb).
She looked capable of that 107, barely, with better attempt selection.
REEVES Olivia Lynn is an incredible talent. 108/134 is totally not befitting that.
Someone give her training that isn't just classics and heavy squats so that she can actually lift the bar, firstly, then hold it overhead.

VALODZKA Siuzanna AIN 5/6, 108+134 (137x) for 242 and provisional OQR #6. She looks in very good shape, like she'll test positive soon.

PALACIOS DAJOMES Angie Paola ECU opened quite heavy on 113, a bit sloppy but probably just first attempt nerves. 117 PB, easy lift.
121kg is eventually loaded, made sharply for a good maximal attempt and WR.
Clean and jerked 135 easily (again sloppy first attempt nerves), 140 okay, looked close to maximal. Missed 143, looked capable but mentally checked out. She looks a bit more muscular than in Bogota/Bariloche, which could be filling out the category (ITA has entered the chat).

Italy bombs another lifter in MISERENDINO Giulia. Started out well with her snatches, but then Ferrari F1 strategy came to her clean and jerks.

I did not expect a WR here, impressive. Did watch like half the lifts afterwards (ITA/BLR/USA), W71 really is the best female class globally.

Half agreed. In terms of quality of lifting, I don't think there's anything to argue.

In terms of competition, I think there are more W71 capable of 260, not that I would bet on it happening.
W59 has close competition for all medal places, W81 may have close competition for all medal places, W49/W71/WSuper have close competition for silver and bronze.

For the men

M61 has interesting intranational battles of China LI Fabin/CHEN Lijun/HE Yueji/DING Hongjie (jk li fabin wins ezpz) and Indonesia having the apprentice Ricko SAPUTRA vs the (almost) Master Eko Yuli IRAWAN. But really, we know Li Fabin wins ezpz, Irawan is still more talented than Saputra and will use old man strength to do 305 for qualification and 300 at the Olympics.

M73 Shi Zhiyong is gone fishing or back broke spinal, so we have a current clear leader in Rahmat Erwin Abdullah, followed by close competition for second, third through to sixth. Similar to W71 I guess.

M89 is a potentially very interesting category, pending two athletes returning from the dead and one athlete who has returned from the dead not dying again (or being superceded by either of his two teammates).

M102 thoroughly disappointing so far

MSuper is the same as it has been for the last 6-7 years. Lasha should just keep cashing his cheques at the bank for the team. The era of 500 never really started but now it's over.

As usual with these time zones, I check the scoreboard after waking up. I'm in an acceptable mood from 6 to 7, daily.

A question:

do you feel that this qualification system pushes the athletes too hard? Are there more failed lifts than in the past, with others qualification systems? Are there any data?
