As you questioned, I am curious to see how the RFWF and BWU will respond. Not exactly sure if their governments would allow the lifters to do the things that the IOC demands for their eligibility, like denouncing the war on Ukraine.

Though they're both old/retired, Oleg Chen and Viktor Getts rather quickly moved abroad. The Chen family were explicitly refugees and now live in California. Getts has been a political provocateur for years (based) supporting athletes/women/education/LGBTQ rights and openly denounced the war on Ukraine. He now lives in Astana, though I don't know if that's permanent.

Along with that, interesting question of who they would send + events (e.g. multiple continentals if trying for Olympic qualification).

It's possible that the IWF and ITA consulted about PRK, but I don't think it's a given. Frankly, I don't think the IWF has the clout to bargain with/bribe the ITA.

I'd strongly consider the possibility that the IOC leaned on the ITA to let this through. The combination of these two things, in relatively short succession (ye ikik Havana Grand Prix entries were due 2023-03-08) suggests to me that the IOC wants to appear apolitical and inclusive by including RUS/BLR/PRK.

Satire isn't dead, it's just struggling to pay rent in a postposthypermetaironic world.

This isn't to say that the IWF hasn't had its own part to play in this debacle. The IWF board members continue their petty and self interested politics, though without an evil overlord to ensure that the corruption/work gets done. Ideally, the IWF qualification policy would have had clauses where NADO non-compliance and lack of ITA OOC access would result in ineligibility for entry.

Can ask for the impossible and get Kasherina vs Rim Jong Sim at 81kg in Paris? If we have to eat a little bit of doping still, can we at least get some absolute all time great female lifters battling it out for old time sake? It would almost certainly mean that we wouldn't get Xiaomei entered, but those 2 vs Koanda, Salazer, Sara Ahmed and Cikamatana would be outstanding.

Agapitov has *something* of a point (lolno) in that he's using the exact same arguments that the West use in regards to their political manoeuvring in the international sport and geopolitical space.

However, Russia doesn't have the same level of resources and media support to naturalise its war crimes and atrocities against humanity, compared to the West. So these statements will get him nowhere internationally.

From an individual and federation standpoint, no doubt Agapitov's response is doing one of (if not all) the following

1. Express his own political beliefs as a Russian nationalist
2. Further his own individual interests in a Putinist Russia
3. Avoid being disappeared
4. Avoid Russian heavyathletics and its athletes being stripped of all money, then poisoned and shot

Sport is war without guns. There is no such thing as apolitical sport, because for something to be apolitical it must be devoid of historical social or economic context. People just like to pretend that sport should be apolitical when it suits them, and assume their own worldview as naturalised and apolitical.

I've no symptathy for Agapitov, the Russian/Belarusian governments or especially their leaders. I just feel bad for their lifters and their people (along with the Ukrainian people of course).

I think private sector funding would result in corporations taking the roles of governments, so corporate politics would create the same situation.

Political interference in sport (or any large organisation) is unavoidable, but the uselessness of our current politics is a symptom of our profoundly ill society.
