FYI for replays with VPN: mullvad* works with the Olympics site! Does not for CCTV5 (Hong Kong or Singapore server).

I dislike the amount of effort required to use such services, so I use VPN Gate which is an academic project from the University of Tsukuba.

Fully free to use, VPNs are community provided and the software running it is all open source stuff.
The creator (Daiyuu Nobori) runs quite a few high speed VPNs from the university (most of the Japan ones).

There are instructions on the site on how to use it. I use SoftEther on PC and OpenVPN on Android.

wrt italians, I think they are overly focused on hitting specific numbers and also expecting competition lifts to be equivalent to training lifts. Which in their training style, one should not expect. Especially not from lifters with significant deficits in the skill/experience of competing, and moderate-large flaws in technique that are related to the psychological issues.

I don't know whether they share coaches or if this is perhaps even a guideline from the NOC (i.e. we expect equal rankings from both genders).

This is the WR, this is what China is doing, this is a medal, this is top 10. I think that's what's on the coaches mind and they unsuccessfully try to brute force it for the women.
The Italian system is different from, for example, the US system: Team Italy has one head coach (Sebastiano Corbu) that decides everything about training, for all the athletes, especially for A class athletes. There are also a number of national coaches at the Olympic preparation center that follows what Corbu says, also for the competitions.

That's the point: when competitions go bad, Corbu always says "in training he/she did easily 5-10kg more than this". For example, after Cuba, when Imperio did not do 85kg, he said that this was strange because she usally did 85kgx2 in training.

Italian team goes heavy (maximal) 2-3 times per week. Maybe this can create a false sense of "confidence"?

Hot points
- Lulù (diminutive of Lucrezia) was very tense, the competition didn't go well but at least she unlocked a total.
- Roca is quite happy because Lulù entered in the ranking list and this is a good starting point for a "final rush".
- She has a really good tempo in squatting under the barbell (do you remember the "scambio"?) but she has some problems in the first part (the "stacco") so she tends to extend back a little and this is the reason for the small jump backward.
- "She handles kilos above that 100kg, especially in deadlift exercises". Does Roca mean she has also more than 100kg in the snatch? I can't understand well his words.
- The strategy was to start low to be sure to make those lifts.
- Roca is against the press out rules because it is independent of the athlete's will (he does not do it to facilitate himself).
- She has problems with the jerk, but she is improved and felt those 117 well (even if she failed).

Zanni did not partecipate to the competion because he has a knee problem that requires surgery. But he cannot do surgery before olympics, so they want to keep it safe by not doing competitions.

A side note: italian athletes are famous for training even the day after the competition. They never rest. What is the reason in your opinion? Is a rest day really so bad?

  • People are interpreting WICHUMA Weeraphon THA competing in the C session as him playing some kind of odd strategy game. I think it's just a product of being one of the very few lifters who haven't inflated their entry total like the Zimbabwean economy.
  • Seriously, what are these idiotic entry totals?
  • As expected, JUNIANSYAH Rizki INA and ZANNI Mirko ITA entered big totals and pulled out. Edit: No surprise Shi Zhiyong pulled out either.
  • Please lifters, give me an IG live stream of the worlds. Spanish commentary from the Colombians in the crowd last year was so much better than Weightlifting House (no hablo español)
  • This camera getting in the face of athletes right after coming off the platform is obnoxious. I would not be surprised if a lifter shoves the camera out of the way at some point.
  • What happened to my boi Yuan Chengfei? Presumably injury and/or retirement. I don't enjoy watching Wei Yinting lift. Yes he took 337 and took the place off Yuan but his lifting was unrefined 4 years ago and even worse now. Having a terrible unstable jerk and then moving to a push jerk is truly an Armenian (I guess now Ukrainian?) moment of all time.

Not that I know of, though the cameraman will be thankful that there are no cars or alcohol in the warmup room.

89kgA session - what did I just watch? The snark from Bud is going to hit a new level in his next article.

Luo Shifang finally matched her capabilities. Konotop will total 240+ though eventually. I didn't like the many reds (again) from Colombia etc.

W64 was pointless. M81 I need to catch up with because I was outside during 30°C in mid-September.

M89 was just embarrassing for CHN. Both should be able to total 390 with 4 attempts each. I thought Vallenilla VEN could & would do more (in the graphics they listed his M96 total as PB, misleading). I did not think IRI could do 215.
