General ramblings
  • W64 didn't watch but looked at the results. Standard non-Olympic category results - it's unfortunate that the categories have created these fractures (it will be worse in future).
  • As always, there are training hall heroes but it seems to have gotten particularly bad over the last few years. Snatching or clean and jerking what look to be third attempt weights, even a week before, seems irresponsible for anyone who does not have high specific work capacity for heavy attempts (i.e. any non-Bulgarian style trainees).
  • Especially obnoxious is doing so and then not even competing. Is competing so much more stressful or risky than working up to a true maximal lift?
  • 12.09.2022 is bringing back the old rest day of yore.
  • I don't know if I've complained about it yet but the IWF has the worst timing of pushing website upgrades.
  • Seems like the competition and accommdation has been very well organised given the feedback of various athletes.

erpel wrote: Tue Sep 12, 2023 7:05 am M89 was just embarrassing for CHN. Both should be able to total 390 with 4 attempts each. I thought Vallenilla VEN could & would do more (in the graphics they listed his M96 total as PB, misleading). I did not think IRI could do 215.
The M81A + M89A VOD seems to not have been uploaded to the Olympic channel. I've looked for it but can't find it. Couldn't watch it live, too busy graduating from university or something idk.

I always thought Mir Mostafa Javadi was capable of ~215 at 89 but would never make it in international competition with a cut. I'm glad to be wrong and I assume he would be glad I'm wrong too.

No clue what happened with the Chinese lifters. My initial guess would be both of them suffering from the inconsistency of their jerks but they both snatched poorly (relatively speaking) as well.

Nino Pizzolato bombing on 168 is presumably a consequence of having an entry total of 390. Which seems unwise given that he's rehabilitating a back injury and has looked unstable in the bottom position, even on 160 in the training hall.

Seeing the training hall results, I thought 160 would be a good opener so I expected them to open on 165, doing 165x/165/170x. Presumably the interviewed coach will say that he snatched 168 easily in training. But maybe I'm wrong, maybe all 3 were close misses and I'm just a hater.

I'll wait for the VOD to see if what I made the fuck up was aligned with reality.

Konotop totaling 240 will turn the cup into a grenade. I'm going to be a bit of a spoiled brat here, but honestly Luo's 107+136 was... not that exciting to me? Part of it is that she's done this before (actually more), just not at World level. She's capable of a touch more but won't be pushed.

Pei Xinyi just looked completely off, technically very different to the last two comps. Maybe a bad weight cut/menstrual cycle stuff or injury?

M81A & M89A weren't scheduled by the Olympic channel for whatever strange reason.
They are however present on the IWF FB (with VPN).

Ackshually, Luo set a NR with her 243 so technically she didn't do more domestically (*nasal voice*).

Hot points
- Nino started working out seriously about 2 months ago.
- in the gym he never tried 168, just 165kg two times but there was a lack in the automatism.
- the most important thing is that after the competition he feels fine to the point that today, the day after the competition, he will do three training sessions, because we can't waste time in view of Qatar.
- Corbu said that he lacked confidence in those loads (especially in the aerial phase) but it was useless to start conservatively, it wouldn't have helped to qualify. The tension in the competition modifies the gestures, in the gym he would have done even more.
- The good thing, according to Corbu, is that the opponents were not in shape as in continental competitions and he finds strange that the iranian lifter improved so much in 3 months.
- On equal terms, Nino would win.
- There are other positives athletes to be declare.
- Oscar has a shoulder injury and thanks to the very good snatch he conquered the title.
- He never did more than 160 in the snatch.
- He failed 180 in the warm up room, but Corbu was sure that he could do it.
- He could qualify in the 89kg even if he is 81kg.

You're quite right, mentally I keep forgetting than she did 105+136 at CNG and thinking she did 107+137. I apologise for my insolence.
I don't know why, I misremembered this stat during last years Worlds as well. Point stands, I want to see someone else battling her in the 240+ range.

Thanks for the IWF FB thing, I totally forgot as it previously wasn't working for me using the same VPN.

To me, Pizzolato ITA looked like he had a total lack of confidence and was mentally getting under before any of them were finished. His pull looked weaker in the training hall but that looked like three psychological misses, no intent in the finish of the lift. Would be curious to hear what comes out in the coach's interview.

Tian Tao's snatch misses were just a general Tian Tao stuff, no explanation other than his lack of hair product.
Li Dayin's second snatch miss was weird, third just didn't quite finish. His body language suggests to me that he was hurt at some point during the competition, but I could just be making it the fuck up.

Andranik Karapetyan, as always, is an exciting snatcher to watch. Giving him a red light for a slightly soft elbow feels like an unnecessary insult to injury, let the man live. His elbows are still attached, good enough for me. Didn't bomb in the CJ either.

IMADOUCHENE Romain FRA had an excellent fight on 209, sorry to see him hurt on 213. Keydomar bullied the barbell 210 after a silly mistake on 209.

Mir Mostafa Javadi IRI was a deserving winner and deserving world champion, in spite of the Chinese misses.
Traditional Iranian/Bulgarian style of making every attempt look maximal so that the opponents get overconfident /s

Half agree wrt Venezuelan super meat boy. His M96 PB total was done fairly recently at 90.90, going 5/6 (missed 2nd CJ but increased and succeeded). If he succeeds on third attempt weights he does 390+, he was always a bit fluffy when he was a true 96.

Looks like I published my prior comment a bit too late.

With regards to "there are other positive athletes to be declared", do you mean known positives removed from the ranking list? (i.e. Rejepbay Rejepov TKM 366, 10th M89). Or do you mean athletes whose sanctions are still being processed?

Rostami is notably absent from the start list, now ineligible excepting any IOC deus ex machina. That being said, I wouldn't entirely be surprised if that was political friction with the Iranian federation either.

Same comments as you about the evils of a rest day etc., even if just resting from the emotional aspect of (bombing) a competition.

Whilst I would not disagree with being surprised by Mir Mostafa Javadi's performance, or the implications behind such comments, it's important to contextualise numbers. He's now filled out 89 better and also (unusually) had lots of successful lifts. He was a 163/204 guy at M81 2 years ago, now doing 169/215 at M89. That's not that out of the ordinary.

Corbu says that there are some athletes who tested positive of which we have no news yet.

Ahahah, they are in a hurry to get qualified.

Corbu says that an élite athlete like Nino cannot "play" in a competition, he has to lift to reach a result.

Great, but 369 is the current cutoff for top 10. I am confident there is a number between 369 and 390 that Nino was capable of making yesterday.

You are right, conservative first attempts would perhaps have been a better choice. I think Team Italy start always high, aggressively, but when in troubles (like in the case of Lucrezia Magistris) they choose a more a lighter approach.

"The Chilean Arley Mendez was another possible medal contender among the entries but he had his accreditation withdrawn before the weigh-in and is out of Olympic qualifying."

Maybe Mendez is one of those names Corbu was referring to?
