73A was a good competition.
Top 3 of Asia absent but podium totals still higher than Europe.
I think Chen L. (with a target of 160+195) should've gone here since CHN has no backup for this class.

Addendum yesterday: ceiling for both Luo and Pei for this quad I'd put at 108+136.

National team coach is a political, not technical appointment in ALL countries. Some of them are fantastic coaches, some of them genuinely know almost nothing (including the rules), most of them fall somewhere in between. Giorgi Asanidze is IMO an example of a fantastic coach who happens to be a national coach, even if I don't personally agree with his ideas on technique.

Current total to qualify is 230, but realistically probably 238 (or 242 for safety).

GOMBOSUREN Enerel MGL gave us our mandatory bomb out by opening PB +6kg.
PHAM THI Hong Thanh VIE goes 96/100/103, 3/3 good lifts and reasonably nice rhythm it seems.
MACROHON Kristel PHI opens at a reasonable 98 and saves it. Misses 102 and 104.
SARNO PALOMAR Vanessa PHI had an excellent snatch session up to 107 (intl PB +3kg).
LIAO Guifang CHN opens after everyone else is finished, 110 easy as going for a walk. 115, slightly harder, not maximal.
120 WR attempt, makes the lift. Pretty much maximal but very well executed, I'm sure someone will wrongly call it "easy".

Clean and Jerk
MUN Minhee unfortunately bombs on 124x.

PHAM THI Hong Thanh goes 118/123/127, giving her 6/6 and a 230 total, provisionally in 10th position in 71kg OQR. Good strategy and lifting from her + her team.

MACROHON Kristel PHI takes 120, misses. Makes it on her 2nd and jumps up to 125, which is missed. She doesn't look in great shape today, but I'm not sure what the reasons are for that.

ZENG Tiantian takes 125 and passes out after the clean, falling backwards. Thankfully she seems okay, she takes 126 and makes it for her 2nd. Moves up to 129, also made the lift but it looked maximal.

SARNO Vanessa PHI takes 126 for a moderately hard clean and easy jerk. 132 for a very hard clean and absolutely nailed jerk. 136 is racked but she can't stand up with it. This gives her a total of 239, overtaking MACROHON for the PHI spot in Tokyo qualification (as expected).

LIAO Guifang once again opens on 140 after everyone else is finished, walking to the corner of the platform to bow before even approaching the bar. Sorta like an artist greeting the crowd at the beginning of a performance. Ofc it's easy as piss.

Guifang takes 148, with a moderately difficult clean and a moderately diffcult jerk. New world record total. "We Are The Champions" by Queen starts playing as the clock ticks down on her 3rd attempt. She withdrew her third attempt on 149, 153 to beat Zhang Wangli wasn't going to happen today.

Overall thoughts

Strong performance from Vanessa SARNO. She looked like she made the most of what she had on the day in snatches and understandably missed a PB attempt. 239 is a solid total for qualification - not safe per se, but if people keep up their stupidity with attempt selection it may be able to sneak in. Additionally, 134 CJ and 241 total looked doable today.

Liao Guifang lived up to my expectations. I kinda wanted to see 270 but I guess I'll have to wait.

ZENG Tiantian looks uncomfortable at this weight.

ANDO Elreen PHI is in a tough spot - her natural BW sits ~63-65 (competed well as a 64 @ Tokyo), so either she has to come down to beat an ageing Hidilyn or go up and beat Vanessa SARNO and Kristel MACROHON. She has snatched 103 in competition and in training at ~63 BW and is capable of putting together 125, 130 at 63-65kg in training so I'm not exactly sure why she would move down. Hidilyn is still the most talented lifter in The Philippines, despite her age. Adding 6-8kg BW could potentially do a lot for Ando's legs and especially back/trunk.

Finally someone lifting to expectations.

Technical matters in weightlifting (or almost all sport/exercise science) are often discussed poorly and there's a lot of misinformation, especially around pain/injury.

There's some level of epistemic responsibility for people like me, who are lucky enough to have the educational background, to sift through the bullshit. Most people never have the same opportunities to go through secondary, tertiary and Master degree educations for a variety of social and economic reasons. I have been that lucky, so it's only right to give something back.

From the IWF camera it looked like slight over pulling with backwards drift so I think you're spot on. She 98% would've lost 122 behind.

I will say the 71 total WR would've been higher already if it had been Olympic since Zhang would've stayed there. She only had one (1) comp at that weight (and snatched 120@71.70)!

W81 should total 10kg more than W71 to justify the class at the very least. Hoping for another (better timed) 159 attempt by Liang X.

M102 starts at a few kilos over 400 for me. If Paredes wins with 190+215 I won't complain.

Li W. is comfy to watch but she basically has no incentive to train strenuously ever again. She'll win either way. I hope for WR attempts every comp, the best one can do.
Really would've been neat if CHN entered Sun Yongjie and her 188 cleans as well for this quad since they have one space left on the women's side.

I don't expect anything above 385 from Li Dayin at 89. No faith that his back has been managed appropriately. When he did 175@81 he was basically singing that one Khia song

Very much agreed, no competition pushing her means her competition performance is fucking boring. I'll keep the TV on to see what happens but realistically for the last couple of Women's SHW comps, I've mentally checked out after the battle for 2nd.

89A
OQR qualification (1kg > 10th) is provisionally 363kg, expected to rise considerably.

Snatches
THARAPHAN Phacharamethi THA takes 145x/145x/145x - partially due to suddenly tightened judging standards. Earlier in the comp, he would've gotten away with it. Silly.

SHOHRADOV Shatlyk TKM tales 161x/161x/163x. Expected.
Yu Dongju KOR takes 155/161 and misses 166.
MOLDODOSOV Emil 160/166 and 169x. 169 was a weird miss, looked like he simply forgot to hold it overhead and his elbow buckled.

TIAN Tao CHN and ROSTAMI Kianoush IRI are brothers in arms (washed). Both did 165 opener, made but looked bad. 172x miss twice for both.
LI Dayin CHN opens at 171 and makes it look easy. Li Dayin takes 176 and makes it look pretty good.
The bar is then loaded to 180. Dayin tries a bit harder, makes it for a new world record. I can't speak to the details, but it appears that the increased bodyweight has done good for Dayin's back injury. He still has a similar style but certain things are sharpened up.

Clean and jerks
Sergey PETROVICH takes 193, 198, 202x. Makes 363, provisional 10th.
YU Dongju takes 195, 201 and misses 206. Totals 362, not an olympic qualifying total, even at this stage.

ROSTAMI Kianoush IRI takes 186, makes the clean but it's hard. Hard jerk but gets three whites.
LI Dayin CHN did 205 to secure a qualifying total.

207 calls out Kianoush, who deadlifts it. He takes it again, cleans it but it's hard. Goes for the jerk but it's wonky and off balance, no bueno. 3rd attempt was a lot better than I thought it would be.

TIAN Tao opens at 210, makes it nice and easy.
LI Dayin CHN takes 216 for a total WR. Makes the clean but it's moderately hard. He goes for the jerk but jumps back behind it and misses.
He takes it again, staying connected to the bar this time.

TIAN Tao takes 222, does a good but not easy clean. Jerks the bar up but dives under and misses it behind. Takes it again - harder clean but nails the jerk for a new world record.

General thoughts

TIAN Tao being his usual mercurial self. It is bizarre that having had the knee surgeries and so on that he's had, that his snatch remains a big weakness. Does he train them?

LI Dayin looks good in the snatches, but his style of jerk still makes no sense to me. The push jerk is a solved problem: go down, go up, go slightly down and then go up again.

I thought we'd seen the end of 2/6 rostami as he was quite reasonable at Worlds last year with his attempt selection, at the Bahrain whatever it was and other stuff. I was wrong.
