The state government of Victoria that was organising the Melbourne 2026 Games announced today that they were pulling out of hosting the event.

This came with very little warning and the announced reason was, as you can expect, cost.

This article explains it well. Very hard to see what happens from here.

I attended the 2022 event and it was outstanding.

From the wording of it, it seems that Victoria never really wanted to take it in the first place which wouldn't be surprising given the economic cost.
If it's true that the city was a last minute option, I guess the Commonwealth Games Federation will need to find a last second option.

The costs are exorbitant. This figure of $6-7 billion dollars is a great way for an event that was somewhat tenuous before, totally out-living its welcome.

Existing venues would be fine for the vast majority of sports.

Malaysian minister of Youth and Sports publishes a notice saying Malaysia will not host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, not a surprise. It is not economically feasible or beneficial for any hosting city or country.

I thought they may have considered co-hosting with Singapore.

CGA needs to wholly scale down the event. It would be far more reasonable using existing facilities and accommodation.

IWF has published the qualification document for Glasgow 2026. No real surprises, but I think Africa is slightly at a disadvantage with the number of competitions their athletes can qualify at.
