These categories are shit, especially on the men's side. The women's categories are not as badly affected but still biased towards lightweights, the men's are appalling. Politics over the wellbeing of the sport any day.

The elephant in the room is that there will still be non-Olympic categories, unless the quota for weightlifting gets bumped back up to well over 150.

Im conflicted about the best concept of spreading weight classes - but there are some big jumps there. On the Men's side there will be many light men who have to seriously think about dropping BW.

If it came down to it, for Los Angeles, could they appeal for 160 slots and make it Top 8, 1 continental, 1 Host/universality slot?

What do the big names do?

MEN
60kg Does Hampton go down? Surely not. Does Li Fabin continue? Wei probably steps up here. Silachai I think competes here. I will be interested to see how Yang does at 55kg this week. PRK's Myong Jin Hak will compete well.

65kg PRK could be strong here too judging by the current 67 class. In fact these classes are very PRK friendly.

71kg Does Rizki try to drop to 71kg and let Rahmat take 79kg? Theyre both lifting in B sessions in Bahrain. Weeraphon I see at 71kg.

79kg This class might take a while to become competitive. Will take time for 73's to come up - Rahmat's class to take I think until what see who is competitive from China.

88kg With a few exceptions 89's come down here right? Lopez, Robu, Javadi. Li Dayin surely drops to 88 and leaves 98 for Gigachad.

98kg Karlos goes up here? You would think its easier to gain weight and keep going heavy. Meso I think drops to 98, Yauheni too. Liu Huanhua vs Karlos would be great to watch at 98.

110kg Akbar perfect fit. Karapetyn I think should go 110, he needs to get bigger to increase his C&J.

Supers are what they are.

WOMEN

48kg 49's going down, this wont be a great class.

53kg Again, how many 55's go down? Kang from PRK could go either way.

58kg Luo Shifang probably drops a kilo.

63kg Could take a while for this to fill out.

69kg Does Olivia go down or up?

77kg Sara Ahmed and Dajomes will dominate here unless Reeves goes uop.

86kg Perfect for Solfrid

Supers no Change

I certainly hope so. Otherwise we could see top 7+ continental + host/universality, or a cut to 6 or 7 categories. Which would defeat the purpose of these changes.

The categories were created purely for political reasons, both in number of categories and distribution of bodyweights. There was no consultation with scientists/analysts. The world has outgrown not only the flyweight, but also the bantamweight (W48 and M60kg) category, in my honest opinion. Few of the top M61 lifters weigh even remotely close to 61kg outside of competition, and few of the W49 lifters actually live close to 49 (often cutting from 51-52.xx).

Many of the M61s would do really well to bulk up to M65 and cut a bit less (less bombouts I hope). 49s cutting to 48 will make the category worse - not enough 49s would be able to cut the mustard at 53. I'd much prefer a minimum senior category of about 50-51 for women and about 62-64 for men.

Rizki dropping to 71 could be awful IMO (maximal strength is already his biggest issue), but it could be politically forced. He'd unfortunately probably have to battle it out with Rahmat at 79 again. Rizki at his heaviest was somewhere between 76-77 in training from memory, Rahmat was 77.6 in competition in Qatar. Weeraphon would be good at 71.

Reeves might just lift at wherever she feels comfortable, it's only a hobby after all.

I think your assessment of the W58 and M88 categories are about right, 1 kilo difference and most of the athletes in those categories sit comfortably there.

W63s should have some good lifters who had to cut to 59. Elreen Ando PHI could become a more consistent lifter at 63 or even 69. Angie Dajomes is a ??? - IMO 77 looks way too big for her, 69 might be too small now that she's a fully fledged adult. Anyelin Venegas might be a surprise entrant here - she already barely makes 59, she could become a mini-fridge at 63.

Assuming the categories will be made official at these World Championships, when do you think they will actually come into play?

We don't know how many WL medals the IOC will allow for 2028, so why make new classes now?

Uh, so are they definitive? so are they final? Do they just have to ratify them?

Another thing:

"Approval of an increased level of partnership with the company SBD, producing sports apparel for the strength industry. Under this agreement, the Sheffield-based company will be IWF’s privileged partner in this area for the next eight years. SBD had already partnered with our International Federation at the IWF World Cup last April and will be again present at the IWF World Championships in Manama;"

Will the IWF become like the IPF, where you have to have a certain type of equipment to compete?

Edit: according to this photo https://www.instagram.com/p/DDIOyJXI8VP/?img_index=3 there will be some national singlet.
