M89 was, as I expected, a bit of an underwhelming session with Nasar being the exception. I believe he was capable of 412 today.

Lopez lifted well/to (high) expectation today. Marin Robu also lifted well, above expectation. The rest of the field were not too hot.

Pizzolato being given his last jerk by the jury makes a total mockery of the referees. They correctly gave him three reds; would a non-celebrity non-medallist athlete be given the same treatment? Marin Robu was robbed of a bronze medal.

Appalling for Karim Abokahla to be sent out after hurting his elbow on the 2nd snatch. He should have been withdrawn, he might have been able to total in the jerk.

Pizzolato my brother, Corbu my father. Roca my bald uncle, Orecchini my cousin.

Jokes aside, a jury reveiw saved the italian expedition. It could have been a total defeat and instead it was a success.

Nasar was frankly unbeatable. Very solid lifts, with margin. Incredible athlete.

The only thing that contextualised Pizzolato's 3 red's overturned to a bronze medal lift better, was when Toma's 3rd attempt snatch thaat was given 3 white lights got overturned to no lift - and she didn't make another successful lift. As it turns out, she would not have medalled even if she made one of those jerks.

Nasar, untouchable by any lifter. Again I mention, 'how does he compare to Ilya 2008?' What will the career arc be?

This sport doesn't deserve Reeves. What a joy. More podium excellence in the C&J in that 71 session.

  • Dajomes sisters are the best snatchers. Not sure why they're weaker in the clean and jerk, it's slightly uncharacteristic compared to their teammates.
  • If Charron deserved her 106, Toma deserved her 117.
  • SANCHEZ Mari COL was fantastic today, she lifted to her absolute limit.
  • Reeves is mega strong in the snatch but the bar drifting that far back overhead in the snatch terrifies me.
  • As predicted, Reeves tried to have fun and she did have fun. My other predictions were wrong.

This is the same problem as 2021 Asian Champs. They gave Kuo a lift with 72 technical infractions because she's a celebrity. Then they got lambasted and butthurt, subsequently going mega anal with the standards because they fucked up.

Same as Ilya, probably dependent on re-analysis. Check back in 12 years.

102 was a good session for his competitiveness, not as much the overall standard of lifting. This was pretty much as expected.
  • idk wtf the uzbek coaches did with djuraev's attempts
  • nevertheless I think liu is the deserving winner
  • belarus' coach threw away the opportunity to get silver and arguably gold, tsikhantsou was electric
  • karapetyan did not continue the trend of improvement
  • meso's poor pulling technique compromises his snatch. poor attempt selection but still quite unlucky to miss all 3 so closely
  • davranbek off cycle? reduced lifts will not be tolerated by the president of turkmenistan. i hope he is going to be ok (serious)

Something of minor note, nobody has pulled out until now correct? There's always been 12/13 entries who showed up each session. I think in several last Olympics we had withdrawals.

Correct, no withdrawals from the event. Only lifters who have withdrawn *during* the competition after injury.

Man Asaad has the best clean, incredible speed and timing.
I have a sweet spot for David Liti Coach Tina Ball, loved seeing him grab a Snatch PB.
I dont think Gor and Lalayan would get a better chance of beating Lasha than this session. I dont think Lasha had another rep in him.

Is that the last we have seen of Lasha? He needs some time off at the very least.

What a great session. A jerk specialist would make things interesting in this class. We'll never know what Meso could have done. I hope they all turn up in Bahrain and we see the second part of this battle because Liu, healthy Meso, Karapetyn, Lesman and Yauheni would be great to watch again. Ahbar probably goes back up to 109

It has taken a while for heavyweight women to fill out in quality lifting and depth but now its one of the best classes. Fantastic 4 way contest. I feel bad for Eileen as really she should have medaled in Tokyo if she was eligible to compete. Koanda, Ahmed and Dajomes are just better.

Koanda really demonstrated the way to approach long term athlete development. Talent ID and resource support. They brought in Sygment early on, Team GB were helping at some competitions, training camps, rep quality, taking makeable attempts, practicing winning in the 87 class but not letting bw climb too high - what a great all-round effort.

  • Liu Huanhua is amazing, despites China doing some illogical pseudoscientific things that reduced his results. When he was an 81, I thought he would make a good 96 but only an okay 102. I am glad to be wrong. If the new weight categories are appropriate for him, growing into his bodyweight will really improve his clean.
  • Meso trained too hard, too close the competition. 178 is an Italian opener, but it would have been doable if he had peaked properly. If he was in better physical condition, I doubt he would have injured himself.
  • Karapetyan did not continue the trend of improvement I was hoping for. C'est la vie.
  • Tsikhantsou is the best clean and jerker of this group technically. He just lacks the strength of Liu.
  • Lesman is past his best as expected. Unfortunate that he couldn't snatch 188 or 190, that injury + aging sounds like it will be the end of his career. Supposedly Bahrain is not paying them much but just offering them a chance to compete without having to outqualify their compatriots.
  • Don Opeloge bombing on 170 was not what I expected but unfortunately not a huge surprise. He seemed to lack the pulling power needed. I wanted to see him hit an outrageous clean and jerk.
  • I hope that Dovranbek Hasanbayev TKM and the other Turkmen weightlifters/athletes will be okay after what the president of Turkmenistan said. Unlike the unfounded claims about North Korean athletes (with similar despotic heads of state), this president actually threatened them.
  • Top 3 above 400 as predicted.

  • A very good session, top 3 all in good physical shape.
  • Koanda has been a star in W87 and showed that the performance at British Nationals was not a
  • I think Dajomes was in physical shape to challenge Koanda, but just didn't put it together. Her first attempts were just technically off, nothing else wrong with them. I believe she was capable of 124+148 on the day. I still think Koanda would have won, just without a WR attempt on her 3rd.
  • Sara Ahmed's invisibility for the entire quad helped her a little bit, but she lifted very well. Dajomes' third attempt was a choice of gold or silver, handing Ahmed the silver.
  • Said invisibility was predictably caused by injury and not malice towards the audience (who are not owed any entertainment from athletes).
  • Cikamatana snatched surprisingly well, but couldn't quite make the heavier clean and jerks. In an interview she said that she felt that she didn't deliver, which is a bit sad. Hopefully she bounces back from this. Her leg injury from 2021 appears to still affect her a little bit in the cleans.
M102+
  • The king stands upon his throne. Maybe for the last time, but we can't be sure. I hope whatever he does in future is what is best for him, not just for the spectators.
  • Rubiawi and Lalayan have good things coming in the future.
  • Lalayan is not yet ready to become the top super. His performance of 467 is good, but he needs to become consistent at the 460+ level to cement his lead over Minasyan. He has the potential to become the next Lasha if he improves his consistency whilst improving his peak.
  • Murakami is fun to watch, seems like a cool guy to be around
  • Kamil Kucera presumably didn't have the lead-up he wanted, but good on him for lifting what he could anyway.
  • Walid Bidani having another terrible Olympic experience is depressing.
