2023 IWF Grand Prix I - Havana, Cuba

Rules and regulations

Start list

I will replace the entry list with the start list when it's released/when I come across it. This time I'll make sure I read it properly and don't post the wrong document.

I will watch (the scoreboard).

The (anti-?)hype for PRK is also not justified. Different generation, they won't come back to set 10 WRs out of nowhere.

Sad we won't see triple bodyweight jerks from a B session anymore.

I'm curious to see what Jhonathon Rivas does, and I notice that Yeison Lopez is eligible again.

The North Korea thing is so odd. This sport has so much going on behind closed doors. Its one of the great frustrations.

I probably won't be able to watch much of it live as I'll be busy. Hopefully the PAWF or the IWF stream it or record it in some way.

But did you expect that to happen like this? Their first lifter M55 is competing today and to my knowledge, the team haven't arrived in Havana.
Supposedly, they were supposed to arrive on the 5th (June 2023) and attempted contact has reportedly been unsuccessful.
I would, tentatively, assume that any delays in transportation that risk Olympic qualification would be communicated with the relevant parties (Moscow/PRK embassy, IWF, etc.).

Pending further evidence or rumours, my suspicion/conjecture might be that they can't be bothered meeting IWF/ITA testing regulations and are thus pulling out of Olympic qualification. It's wouldn't be a gigasurprise, but it does feel like a moderately large surprise.

For other countries/federations pulling out of this competition, I wonder if the financial burden was too great. In order to qualify for Paris, any current non-participants would have to do multiple continentals, which I'm sure will involve more politicking.

?!
I didn't expect it to fizzle out like this. No answers. Just dust in the wind, great.

My suspicion is they only recently received notice of the 2024 OOC testing requirement, i.e. the changing of rules, and thus parted.

Day 1-3 recap.
PRK has formally pulled out, with somewhat conflicting info from some different sources as to reasons given/not given.
As for the real reason, I'm sticking with my speculation that they don't want to let the ITA in for 2024.

Women
W45/W49/W55 unremarkable.

Piron DOM wins from the B session due to a low entry total being put in by a coach not travelling to Cuba.
Imperio ITA appears to be hurt.

Men
M55 was only a competition in the most redditguy sense of the word, with two competitors (one being a local lifter).

M61 not particularly interesting but some changes to OQR.
A lot of missed lifts in the clean and jerk. 37.5% (9/24) success rate in CJs, though only one bomb from GARCIA Rowel PHI.

MORRIS Hampton Miller USA does 290 to go from 10th to provisional 7th OQR.
CALDERON LICOURT Arley Lazaro CUB takes provisional OQR #9 with 286 (125+161, 4/6)

MUHAMAD Aznil Bin Bidin takes the OQR #10 provisionally for Malaysia with 285 (129+156, 3/6). MOHAMAD ANIQ Bin Kasdan MAS competed in the B session, unable to better his prior 284 total from Jinju.

Imperio did a strange meet.

In my opinion the Italian coaches wanted her to compete in another weight class to push her, to unlock her snatch, mostly. This is way the second call in the snatch was 85kg, something she did only in 2021. The problem with the scoreboard may have affected her snatch competition? I don't know, but also the first attempt was a little bit "off".

That clean... well, I I've never seen her do a clean like that. The question is: she was already injured or she injured herself with that clean?

I'm watching the Grimsland 2nd attempt jerk at 188. Obviously, not for the first time, he's got some helicopter action going on. I'm now asking myself what the purpose is of the down signal.

I feel like since 2019 we've seen a move towards stricter judging. Its not any one thing they've become strict on, but the least forgiving over-rules are when the lifter has some rotation going, they hear a down signal, they're obviously on the limit and so they put it down. If judges are erroneously giving down signals, then is there review of their performance? What price are they paying for getting that wrong?

Men's 67
Mostly unremarkable.
IRAWAN Eko Yuli INA surprisingly didn't just weigh in. He weighed 66.85 and did 145+176, 5/5 (declined 3rd CJ, looked to be capable of 180).
If he's trying to be a 61 that'll fall back down to 135-138 + 167-172 with a weight cut.

MASSIDDA Sergio ITA did 135+165, 3/6. About what was expected.

Men's 73
Mostly unremarkable. No changes to OQR top 10.
MOSQUERA Luis COL and ZANNI Mirko ITA did not lift, just weighing in.
JUNIANSYAH Rizki INA continues a run of bad form, bombing out. Also bombing out is Takehiro KASAI JPN.

GRIMSLAND Ryan Henry USA places first given Rizki's bombing. Was it confirmed whether or not the overturn was due to putting it down early/feet not in-line etc? I saw a minor press out. Regardless, remove the jury.
