The Sanctions Thread
Re: The Sanctions Thread
Expected athlete; unsurprising compound.
Re: The Sanctions Thread
So,third Turkish Athlete with a doping violation. They may loose some quota places or even be eliminated from Paris 2024. I Guess they will try to drag this as long as they can
Ukraine,Kazakistan and Turkmenistan also at risk ???
Re: The Sanctions Thread
Kashirina Banned till 2030
Re: The Sanctions Thread
Not for the first time, I'm conflicted reading that. A great athlete from a doping country trails off their career with a ban. From her point of view, she will no doubt feel unjustly treated, from another perspective, she represents 'the problem'.
How do we look at her career? The 2014 worlds performance is of course a high point, having the weight on the bar in London and not making it will no doubt be a lingering thought for her forever. Zhou Lulu was just better that day. 181 looked like a limit rep for tatiana and 187 was not close, she couldn't clean it. Enough isn't made of 2013 worlds where tatiana turned the tables to win and jerk 190 for the WR.

Note, this was not a new test/sanction/suspension, rather a re-trial of this (2020):

Re: The Sanctions Thread
Sad. It starts out with a suspension at 15 for steroids. I believe the plan was for her to compete in Beijing (could've medaled).
If Zhou could've continued after AG 2014 I think the (old) C&J WR would also be higher (195 in 2015).
In retrospect the most interesting for me is now the 2018+2019 performances.
Re: The Sanctions Thread
Short and easy answer:
Her career brings about mixed feelings and a lot of questions. In absolute terms (i.e. not taking into account drugs), she's the greatest SHW woman ever. But drugs she did, with a metenolone positive from age 15.
I agree with erpel in that the 2018 and 2019 performances were interesting. In the post-2018 Russia era she was still a seriously good lifter at both super and 87, despite age and injuries catching up to her.
It does beg the question of whether Kashirina's prime totals (ignoring 2014 WWC) were completely drug driven or if she used them more sparingly than many other Russians. She did train separate to the other Russians, so it's not out of the question.
Her time in the spotlight also does take away from other top women's supers - partially Jang Mi-Ran and Zhou Lulu, but especially Meng Suping. You can't view one athlete's careers in isolation without consideration of others, and I think that's a negative aspect of her legacy. Meng Suping may have won in Rio, but rarely is she rated in the same way as the other top women's supers.
Ultimately, I disagree with the common notion that she's the GOAT of women's SHW. But I do think she's an S-tier lifter, who deserves to sit alongside Zhou Lulu, Jang Mi-Ran, Meng Suping and now, Li Wenwen.

The discussion of the pantheon of best female supers is an interesting one. I'd love to hear some opinions on this from within China.
