And we're down to 382 start book names (GP II):

I'll wager at least a fifth of those will not compete as well.

Anyone want to take a guess on what Shi does? He's actually competing in the 73A session.

He would need 353 to take the #1 spot from Rahmat Abdullah, does he try for 164/190?

Grandiose pre-Grand Prix thoughts
  • I expect Shi Zhiyong to pull out after the athlete's presentation and go fishing with Tian Tao. Not a joke. 338+ to beat Wei Yinting for any remote chance at qualification would be the goal, not beating Rahmat.
  • Antonino Pizzolato looks capable of putting together a total in the danger zone of the qualification rankings, but not his best shape.
  • Li Dayin is in the 89B group because the 89A group entries are almost all fake.
  • Tian Tao may be slightly tired for his fishing trip if he has to lift in the A session.
  • North Korea (derogatory)
  • The weigh in only 60kg entry rule will be thoroughly ignored again.
  • The rankings have not been updated after the Pacific Games/OWF championships.
  • Things I did not expect: Redon Manushi coming back grom retirement.

My hunch is a 340 total for Shi to place in the top 10 (5) and then compete once more in April.

  • Excellent performance by Jiang Huihua, up 1kg to 216 (96+120). Hou Zhihui continues to get outdone in the competitions; going 3/3 for snatches without pushing Jiang. Hou lacking leg strength for 120+ cleans and using a quad-only jerk strategy means that she has to be a snatch specialist.
  • Not sure if the attempt selection is Chinese politics or lack of more capability. Hou looks capable of 98 to me.
  • Rosegie RAMOS PHI continues to add 1kg at a time to her total, stays in OQR #9 but goes up from 188 to 191. Attempted 106 jerk twice for 194 (OQR #7).
  • RI Song Gum PRK loses 3kg from Asian Games total, possibly due to misses or possibly due to cycling off.

  • IRAWAN Eko Yuli 132/136/138x + 162x/162x/165x. SAPUTRA Ricko 129/133x/133x + 161x/168x/168x. Irawan remains the INA slot holder with 300. As I said earlier in the quad, I think Saputra is technically capable but won't put it together.
  • LI Fabin CHN 132/137x/137, set to open on 155 but pulled out. Rumoured to have hurt his elbow.
  • Hampton MORRIS USA 122/125x/126x + 170/174x/174x, 292 OQR #9. Big clean and jerk.
Non competition
  • 340 would be Shi's goal, but from his 140 snatch/160 CJ in training weakly suggests to me a top-end capability of ~160/180 CJ. I'm still a believer in the fishing theory, though I acknowledge I'm being quite cynical.
  • Pizzolato will need 371 minimum to qualify. To me that looks like a difficult task, 160 in the training hall looked like a reasonable opener with a top capability of ~170. No clue about his shape for clean and jerks.
  • Fares Elbakh/Meso Hassona QAT looks to be in the best shape he's been in since his injury, 175/210 look like they will be his openers. I don't think he's capable of 400 but I think he can probably bump his total up into the mid 390s.
  • Rahmat Erwin Abdullah INA doesn't look peaked, probably just training through the competition. Might be wrong.

Will Giulia (Imperio) be able to qualify for the Olympics?

This is the (partial) ranking list:

9 RAMOS Rosegie 191
10 ECHANDIA ZARATE Katherin Oriana 190
11 LIN Cheng Jing 186
12 IMPERIO Giulia 185

I'm sure she is able to do 187 (maybe 85-102? Or 87-100?) but no sure she can reach 191. I hope Nina Sterckx has definitely changed her category, otherwise... .

There is no the classic after-competition interview but there are some some statements by Sebastiano (Corbu) and Giulia:

Sebastiano
"We are on the right track. We started heavy because we wanted to try to achieve a good result, and Giulia responded well by making two spectacular entries. What she did is her competition best, also because she started with numbers that could easily be her end points; she did a bit more in training, but in the competition, she couldn't bring it out. I am very satisfied."

Giulia
"I am glad to have faced this competition like this. The desire to showcase the work we are doing is strong, and in every competition, I am gaining something more. I know that what I have done wrong can be improved, and I can do it confidently. We need to continue working even harder and with greater determination. Thanks to all the people who are always by my side, every day, pushing me to bring out 'the Giulia that I am.'"

  • LUO Shifang CHN had her breakout moment at 2023 WWC where she had her international PBs increase above her national PBs. 247 equals the total WR, somewhat surprised they didn't attempt to break it. If she does 250, she'll be in her Deng Wei arc.
  • CHARRON Maude CAN had a very good competition. She seems to be recovering well from her injury earlier in the qualification period and is a serious medal contender if she can stay healthy.
  • DIAZ Hidilyn PHI snatched well, 1kg PB. Pulled out of clean and jerks.
  • VENEGAS VALERA Anyelin Maria VEN hit a 3kg total PB (5kg PB snatch), moves up to OQR #9.
M73
  • SUHAREVS Ritvars LAT lifted very well after combing back from shoulder surgery, hitting 156+185 (both looking maximal). 341 total is looking quite safe for now, despite a lot of people having potential around the same area.
  • WEERAPHON Wichuma THA looked like he was having a mock competition.
  • AAAAAAA 160/180 looked like I expected it to after seeing he didn't pull out. Clearly still heavily affected by his back pain, looks to be worse in cleans/snatches than in squats or pulls.
  • In my opinion, he looks capable of more in the snatch if he stays better connected in the finish. 163+ looked possible even if unlikely, in the same manner as he would miss 140 or 160 before going up to 165+ as he does. Squat cleans look like his limiting factor at the moment. If he can do 165+190 by the World Cup, he could be sent if someone else gets hurt.
  • However, I think if Rahmat is in shape, he'll need closer to 360 to win, which doesn't seem possible.
  • MOSQUERA Luis COL 330 again, again.

I think it's possible but my guess is no, simply because there are too many people around that range and Italian attempt success rate has been quite rough for most lifters.

Rosegie RAMOS PHI is quickly and consistently improving so she's probably out of reach. The real close competitors are Lin Chen Jing TPE and both Mexican 49s. I give the edge to Lin (though I think Yesica Hernandez has the highest potential of the 3).

Whether or not Sterckx is a 59 will depend on whether or not she can put together a big total at 59. Her 2nd and 3rd attempts looked impossible today but it could simply be that she was flat. At the Mediterrnaean Games she did 98+122 (missed 100 closely, 125 not racked).

She seems healthier at 59 and clearly will mature better into that category than 49, but currently she might get knocked out of the 59s unless she can put together 3-4 lifts. My gut feeling is that she will try her best to qualify as a 59 and if she's knocked out, she'll drop to 49, which would subsequently determine other slots.

Results are crazy for this type of competition.
