Minor competition thread
Re: Minor competition thread
I'm tempted to say that 71 women and 89 men were better than worlds. This grand prix has created a unique situation where cross-continent competition comes together with some lifters going absolutely max.
First time Keydomar has really struggled. Lopez, Santavy and Nino back. Karapetyn doing a 200kg jerk.
The compliments for Olivia Reeves are exhausted. That is one of the finest performances I have seen from a female lifter from a western country - and a junior. Does it scare China out of the 71 class? Probably not, Guifang has 270+ ability as we saw at worlds.

Re: Minor competition thread
I am impressed with the level of competition in this event. Some excellent totals, surprise performances, and just plain good sessions.
Re: Minor competition thread
Am I mistaken or have there been a lot of lifters at the Grand Prix pull out after snatching (both seemingly injured and uninjured)? Is the idea that if you didn't get the snatch you were trying to yeet dont bother hitting a C&J?
This is not the Liu Huanhua we saw at Asian Games or Worlds. Meso is not going to snatch 180. Lesman is an unknown quantity at the moment. South Korea is still in the mix - Asian Championships are going to be great in a few months.
Good to see Don Opeloge snag a medal.
I fear we have seen the end of Zhouyu Wang. She was one of my favourite lifters up to Tokyo, but Xiaomei Liang is just better. A new WR on 5 lifts, she has made a solid case for China to send an 81 to Paris.

M89
- Good results on the whole.
- Unsurprised that NASAR Karlos BUL hit another WR in the C+J, a little surprised about his snatch performance.
- LOPEZ Yeison COL 180+210 was very unexpected after 2023 WWC (171+200, 205x @ 90).
- PIZZOLATO Antonino ITA 170+210 was around what I expected his capability to be (a bit more than I expected in C+J). 380 has him safe for qualification.
- SANTAVY Boady CAN surprised me, 172+200 372 5/6 was a much better performance than I expected. Squeaks into the top 10 but could be knocked out due to clean and jerks.
- Again, good results.
- LIAO Guifang CHN 6/6, looked to still be affected by her issues after Asian Games IMO but conservative attempts and still ahead of every non PRK lifter.
- REEVES Olivia USA had an excellent performance and very rapid improvement after WWC. 115+147 puts her in ranking #2, and high enough to be pushing China (especially if Guifang is not in good shape come Olympic time).
- SARNO Vanessa PHI quietly had a very good competition, 5/6 108+149 for 249 total and #5.
- The IWF fucked up the results DOB again, spawning new lifters.
- Not a strong roster of lifters outside of the top 3.
- 110 snatch attempt locked stably overhead but unable to stand up for ZIELINSKA Weronika POL, rare for the new wave of Polish lifters.
- LIANG Xiaomei CHN opens on 115, no dramas. Same for 120, 123.
- WANG Zhouyu CHN hits an extremely easy 120 snatch opener, up to 125. Misses twice, not close. Close miss on 155; strangely a missed jerk, from one of the most reliable jerkers in the world.
- CIKAMATANA Eileen AUS 112+149 wraps up bronze.
- The category is starting to get better and closer to normal but the results are still relatively lowered (which at least makes for good competition).
- ELBAKH Fares QAT 176+224 is what I expected in the snatch, a bit better than my expectation in the clean and jerk. The 2nd 400+ total in the OQR.
- LIU Huanhua CHN clearly not invincible when he's not peaked.
- BRATU Tudor MDA 390 gets into top 10, continental slot goes to Pan American KITTS Wesley USA. ABOHKALA Karim EGY will need to eat some food and lift 391, doable but he weighed in at 93.58 at this competition.
Re: Minor competition thread
Did you know Denis Ulanov is still active? I did not (lifted 89C group here).
Re: Minor competition thread
Women's super
- Big clean and jerk from THIESSEN-LAPPEN Mary to take the USA slot off ROBLES Sarah, 283 total.
- Results otherwise unremarkable, with respects to performances vs bests for the athletes
- Fischer technique is interesting.
I remembered seeing him at 2022 WWC and maybe at something within Kazakhstan? Don't quote me on that. He is now presumably somewhat cleaned up (or terribly affected by age) as his results have been decimated compared to his peak.
Re: Minor competition thread
I thought Li Wenwen would compete since her light entry total (e.g. 120+140) to see if the elbow holds. But whatever.
Re: Minor competition thread
The World Cup (Thailand) entries have been out for a while:

Re: Minor competition thread
The World Cup was forced into the qualifying document purely because of money.
Supposedly, it will be a great event where all the top lifters will be and they can bring in sponsors etc etc. Of course, most of the top athletes will just weigh in and peace out. Only those on the edge of qualification will push themselves.
