2024 Continental Championships
Re: 2024 Continental Championships
At 69 Liu Chunhong and Kasaeva RUS both did 153 as second attempts back in the day. And of course you had even higher numbers at 75 (e.g. Podobedova 161).
Re: 2024 Continental Championships
Outstanding performance from Kim Suhyeon KOR, 110+144, 6/6 and rank 7. M89 Asians was a lower standard as top lifters were absent and contenders out of shape.
Re: 2024 Continental Championships
W87+/M102 Asian
- Good Korean battle in Women's SHW, both capable of 296 for the slot but Park Hyejeong holds onto it.
- Bad Korean battle in M102, both look to be hurt.
- Akbar Djuraev capped out at 180/220, exactly as I predicted.
Re: 2024 Continental Championships
M109+
- didnt watch
- ASAAD Man SYR 192+252 is 1kg below his total in Bogota, 3/5 lifts. Missed twice on 200.
- Surprising misses for MINASYAN Gor BRN. 207+236 with misses on 212 and 242 is certainly concerning.
- BIDANI Walid ALG snatched 203 for a new PB/African record but missed all 3 clean and jerks on 222.

Giulia Imperio's competition analysis by Pietro Roca
- The preparation for the competition was straightforward and Giulia was fine;
- She entered at 83 to stabilize her position at the European championship and to begin the climb to 191kg, which would take her into the Olympic top ten. Those were safe kilos, which she had made several times, even with doubles;
- The warm up was fine, also the last warm up lift at 80kg;
- In the first attempt, she went too much on tiptoe in the first pull (stacco) and needed to throw herself back and hit the barbell to recover the lift (Note: the italian school wants you to lift and stay on your forefoot)
- In the second attempt she moved too far back, she sat down and the barbell remained forward;
- in the third attempt she did the same error of the first attempt but the barbell was closer;
- They decided to not to do the clean and jerk to preserve the athlete.

I heard the WH guy saying that her snatch made lifts ratio is under 35% ??? And her clean jerk as been stagnant for years too. Honestly i don´t think she will be able to do 191 but she has still one chance.
Re: 2024 Continental Championships
The Italian team had a strategy in this olympic qualification: just push harder and harder, even if it meant dropping out of the competition! So that number is reasonable. I feel that in the recent months something has changed, but maybe its to late?
Re: 2024 Continental Championships
It's the same story every competition.
Top training results are less meaningful when done at a heavier bodyweight (for some individuals), when heavy attempts are done frequently (regression to the mean) and when there is a clear weakness in the skill of competing itself. I don't imagine the recent competition history has been helpful for their lifters' confidence, especially the women.
The inherent weakness in the Italian women's technical style of the snatch/clean is typically accentuated when a lifter is anxious and/or approaching maximum weights. They often have a powerful second pull but weak "finish" to the lift, sometimes with adequate bar height and sometimes without. For most lifters, Italians seemingly included, lifters who struggle under pressure tend to either rush the start, or cut the finish.
Side note: Lifting from the forefoot is not particularly unique, some Asian countries do the same. I typically coach lifters that way to start with, but I encourage lifters to play around with their foot pressure to see what works for them. Allowing for the foot/ankle to be involved in my experience makes the first pull more difficult but allows for a more vertical trajectory through the middle of the pull and an overall stronger second pull. This is assuming that the lifter is capable of maintaining appropriate balance with relatively forward pressure.
Euro results so far have been mostly as expected, though with some exceptions.
ANDREEV Bozhidar BUL doing 348 (3rd) was more than expected, I think that'll be about the top end of his capability.
Muhammad Ozbek Furkan TUR doing 336 (8th) is more or less expected, he tends to do more in the training hall.
Hampton Morris USA 297 was very strong and more or less secures his qualification IMO. If he continues to improve, he may do 300 at the Games.
Re: 2024 Continental Championships
This is not discussed nearly enough. In fact, I can't recall this being raised in an open forum, and when I have described to people what I refer to as a 'not a competition friendly snatch technique', I get first incredulous looks, but eventually nodding.strapping wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 2:35 am
